Inlays
are dots, diamond shapes, lightning
bolts, or letters and numbers that are
set into the fretboard
of the guitar,
between frets.
They are often done in plastic on guitars
of recent vintage, but many older, and
newer, high-end instruments have inlays
made of mother of pearl, abalone, ivory,
or any number of exotic materials. On
some low-end guitars,
they're just painted. There are single
inlays on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 15th,
17th, 19th, and 21st frets,
and double inlays on the 12th, sometimes
7th, and (if present) 24th fret.
